Artist's Statement

For me, art is an extension of my life experiences.  As a child and young woman, I was drawn to animals, specifically horses.  Riding became my passion, a passion that culminated in a silver medal in the dressage competition in the 1972 Olympics. Once I became an American citizen, my interests evolved and expanded.  Travel, ballroom dancing, and competitive golf all beckoned.

More recently, I have been drawn to painting.  It is through art that I am tying all these life experiences together.  My joy, my focus, and my love of color all come alive in my paintings.

Because I believe in "learning while living," I seek out excellent artists.  They not only broaden my artistic knowledge, but also critique my work.

During my relatively short but intensive artistic career, my work has been recognized for excellence at The Sarasota Art Center and at The Field Club competitions.

Recently I have opened my own combination art studio and guesthouse.  This gives me a wonderful place to peacefully continue my work.  I look forward to collaborations with commercial galleries.

Reviewer's Comment

Hamburg-born painter Karin Schlüter-Billings has been a resident of Sarasota, Florida for 20 years.

Before her career as a painter began, Karin Schlüter was an Olympic-medal-winning dressage rider and judge of this elegant sport. As a judge she will tell you that she looked for "perfect style in a rider—that is, an empathy between the rider and the spirit of the horse."

This sensitivity between rider and horse translates into Karin's art. Her process is highly personal: she uses a powerful expressionistic impasto technique with solid color and strong, visceral rhythms of pigment, reminiscent of German Expressionism at the beginning of the twentieth century. This emotional force, however, is controlled by a preference for traditional subject matter, such as figures, animals, and landscapes, played out within a classical sense of composition.

A Romantic-Expressionist, she combines the sensual with the classical in a psychological balance that is both genuinely felt and authentically realized.
